For all of you Laker fans out here in the "great" greater L.A. area, just heard some new news on the Lamar Odom front...

*L.A. Laker forward Lamar Odom has rejected and "laughed" at the Laker's offer sheets proposed to his agent. It is widely believed that if he doesn't get a 5 yr deal, he may call it quits and pursue his other passion, food. That's right, word has it that he is in a partnership deal with Kareem and Luke Walton to open a Sould Food joint in downtown Manhattan Beach, CA. Should be interesting to see where this goes!

So you can all weep now, that is unless you love soul food! Luke already has a BBQ place at the beach, so this seems legit! Good luck LA!

BOOYA!!

Well, well, well....The great "Mannywood" has finally crossed the proverbial "Manny being Manny" line. A 50 game suspension for using a banned substance. hGC, a female fertility drug was his drug of choice. This is used to start up the body's natural testosterone production after a cycle of steroids...among other things. I have to admit when I first heard the news this morning I was sure he got suspended for Weed. I mean, look at the guy and how he acts. I'm sure after hGC that is his second drug of choice! I think it's great. He whines his way out of Boston and then basically holds out almost all of spring training to get paid. What goes around comes around my friend. I'll be the first to admit, I was a Manny fan when he was with Boston. These last couple years though he has really gotten to show everyone who he really is. It will be interesting to see how the people out here in L.A. treat him when he comes back, or, better yet what they'll be saying today and the next week or so. I'll bet, being around L.A. sports fans for 7 yrs now, that they will just make excuses for him and keep wearing those stupid dreadloc wigs. It's just how "fans" are out here. I'll stop now before I go off on that subject...
Anyway, I think it's fantastic that this happened to Los Doyers! I feel bad for Joe Torre, but that's pretty much it. The thing with it is that Manny will only lose around $7-8 million. ONLY $7-8 million! That's what the Dodgers get for spending $45 million on a guy...yet another superstar talent on some stuff. We'll see how this all plays out but I'll bet there is going to be some kind of investigation by MLB as to why he was taking this. And where that will go who knows? My gut says that it leads to where everything else has led; that he has or had been taking steroids for a period of time. They said when the A-Rod info came out that there were over 100 other names. I say just throw all the names out to the world and call it a day. This one name at a time stuff is for the birds, and just isn't good for the game. Lets know who done it and move on!

On another note....I still state my case that the ONLY major homerun hitter in the past 15 years to not be named by the Mitchell report, Jose Canseco, MLB or any other investigation is Sammy Sosa. Say what you will about him, and plenty people have, but he has NEVER been named in anything. Even after he went to Congress with McGwire, Palmeiro and others, he is the only guy from that day not to be mentioned. Just a thought...

Booya!!

Cubs??? Not so much...

It's the same ol' same ol' that we've been seeing for how many years now? People are already getting hurt, blaming the media, yada yada yada... We score 10 runs one game then go 4 or 6 games scoring 1 or 2. They'll play just well enough in spurts that they'll stay near the top of the central, but that's it. I don't see them winning the division at all though. St Louis has a BASEBALL team. They hit for contact, are disciplined at the plate and all play the game hard. The Cubs have some guys that do that all the time and some that do it sometimes or just enough so that it doesn't seem too obvious when they're not. Anyone with a decent amount of common sense should have know that Milton Bradley would get hurt (albeit, I didn't think it would be 15 games into the season). And his suspension and BA just make thinks worse. And how 'bout our new closer? Can't save many games with an ERA over 6; but I guess we have to score some runs first so he can have a chance.
I know most fans and "experts" love the additions of Bradley and Gregg, but I think we got worse getting rid of DeRosa and Wood; what's Miles done? Nothing. Maybe I'm jumping the gun here with pessimism, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to love about this years team. Here's to hoping it turns around soon!

I tell you what, other than the first 2 days of March Madness, opening day of the MLB season and maybe New Year's Day, Easter has to be one of the greatest days to watch sports on the television. So many great things from the NBA to day baseball. Not to mention the final round of the Masters in Augusta, GA. Great day all around. And I tell you what...As I write this Phil is 4 shots off the lead; he just might pull this off...

Senseless

I need to take a moment and relax on all the negative things I've said about the Anaheim (I still refuse to call them their "official" name) Angels in recent posts. If you haven't heard, their top prospect and starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed early this morning in an accident not far from Angel stadium. He had just pitched 5 innings and was pretty spectacular, giving Angel fans a glimpse of what they'll be able to watch for the next 10 years. Unfortunately and senselessly, on his way from the ballpark just after midnight a drunk driver ran a red light and T-boned the car he was a passenger in. 3 of the 4 kids in the car died and the 4th is in intensive care. Many Angel fans were at the scene of the accident this morning around 8am paying respect and even more showed up at Angel stadium and made a make-shift memorial.
I've bashed Angel fans and the organization pretty much since my arrival in SoCal nearly 7 years ago. I'm gonna take it easy for now on after watching various news reports with fans and seeing the press conference in which everyone was brought to tears with their emotions. From manager Mike Scioscia to Adenhart's agent Scott Boras, all were overcome with emotion. The game was understandably cancelled and play will resume Friday with one more Angel fan watching from above.

This brings me to my next topic of idiots and DUI's. The punk ass who hit, and RAN, was only 22 AND already had a suspended license for a prior DUI offense not long ago. That's right, I said ran. This dude hits 4 people and another car, whose driver was not hurt, gets out of his minivan and starts running away! Coward. A full blown, piece of shit Coward. No one that was killed was over 25. There's gotta be a better way to punish people who are accused of DUI. I know for a fact, that here in CA if you get convicted of a DUI all you have to do is attend some AA classes do community service and pay a fine and you're done. License back and you're good to go. I know you can't really stop people from driving if their license is suspended, but there's gotta be a tougher penalty so these idiots think twice about it.

Sorry for the "debbie downer" post today, but it's just a shot in the arm of reality for us all. You never know when it's gonna come. Hopefully later than sooner. Just live one day at a time and appreciate what you have. Do something nice for someone and smile. Enjoy the simple things, like running on the beach! Anyway, I'm out. All positive stuff tomorrow...I promise!

Some Random MLB Stuff

A few things from watching the first week of the MLB season...

* Watch out for Atlanta in the NL East. They have kinda been written off to start the season; the Phillies and Mets seem to be the talk of the water cooler during the winter. It almost reminds me of the AL East last year with all the talk on the Red Sox and Yankees, and then the Rays come out of nowhere. With Derek Lowe and Jair Jurreins at the top of their rotation and a solid closer in Mike Gonzalez, add in a "normal" year from Jeff Francoeur to go along with solid production from Brian McCann, Yunel Escobar, Kelly Johnson and Casey Kotchman this team could really surprise some people. They're in the midst of sweeping the Phillies in Philadelphia to open the season right now and that momentum could give them the confidence to keep it goin. Not to mention Bobby Cox is a genius..

* Was there anything better than seeing Ken Griffey Jr homer in his first game back with Seattle in 12 years? Here's a guy who has done everything the right way, never had his name in any of the recent scandals and just goes about his business day to day. I don't think there's been a more "low-key" superstar hall of fame athlete in my generation that has done it so "quietly." Good for him and good for baseball fans everywhere. Here's a toast to you!

* The Washington Nationals are going to be horrible.

* If I see one more idiot out here in L.A. wearing a Manny Ramirez dreadlock wig I'm going to vomit. My prediction is he lets them grow so long that as he's rounding 1st base one of them whips around and scratches his eyeball, thus ending his season.

* If the Cubs don't play Reed Johnson in center at least 70% of the time they will not win the division. He brings energy, speed & grittiness to a team that doesn't have much of it. Not to mention he's a contact hitter and wears his uniform the right way. He is everything that Kosuke Fukudome isn't...and that's a good thing. Also, I predict Milton Bradley will play 80 games tops. He almost got hurt twice on opening day performing routine tasks like running to first base. He's never been able to be an everyday RF and asking him to do so after playing only a handful of games there last year is asking a lot...

* I said when the Yankees signed Sabathia that he wouldn't win more than 12 games with them. After his 1st start, it looks like I may be right. People forget he was like 6-10 or something before going to the Brewers last year. Sure, he was brilliant after going to the National League, but hitters were also facing him for the 1st time. Advantage is always with the pitcher in those instances. Plus, pitching in that division is a bit different than in the NL Central. Instead of pitching to Pittsburgh and Houston and Cincinnati he's now got the Red Sox, Rays and evidently Orioles to worry about. A bit tougher to say the least...

* The L.A. Angels of Anaheim (don't even get me started w/ their name!) couldn't even sell out on opening day. This is a team that had the best record in baseball last year and is predicted to repeat this year in the AL West. Thus, proving my point, again, that SoCal "sports" fans are the worst and don't care about anything until the end of a season, if their team is good. This entire portion of the state should just be sitting on one giant bandwagon! They were even selling good seats for $3!! 3 freakin' dollars! Yet still, nobody would come. I'll just bet that in Boston, Chicago, NY etc. they're not having this problem. Hell, even San Francisco sold out the first game! Gimme a break...

On another note...
Has anyone tried the Bumpy Jelly Bean Nerds candy? Simply delicious. And you don't spill them everywhere like with regular Nerds.

A few Random things...

I love the MLB network! I'm sitting here watching the Cubs vs. Pirates from 1991. Mark Grace just got hit by a pitch, Andre Dawson has an RBI single and Ryno has 2 hits. Not to mention Shawon Dunston had the best arm of any shortstop of all time! Oh, and Don Zimmer is in the dugout calling the shots. Good times!

In the past 4 days I have watched the 1st three seasons of "The Office." Genius.

Why is it so hard for some people to park on the side of the street. Is it too much to ask for some common sense when doing so? I mean if there's room for 4 cars, don't park right smack in the middle; now there's only room for 3 cars. And I don't know what it is about idiots here in California, but the people that live around me all have like 5 cars and they drive none of them! The only time they drive them is to move from one side of the street to the other on street sweeping days! Shit pisses me off and I even have a garage!

Wow, what a day. As I mentioned above, the '91 Cubs are playing on the MLB network and on ESPN Classic Purdue is playing Kansas in the '93 NCAA tournament. No big deal, Cuonzo had a measly 30 and Big Dog went off for 43 and a nasty dunk on Ostertag. Was there ever a better college player than Glenn Robinson? NO

Some more on this whole Jay Cutler to the Bears fiasco...It's funny how when you look at polls and hear different "experts" talk about this trade. The only people who think the Bears got the better end of it are Chicago writers and talk show hosts and a hand full of Bears' fans in Chicago. Everyone else believes the Broncos are much better off. They got an established NFL QB to throw to their already established receivers and a bunch of draft picks to sure up their D. I'm surprised the Bears didn't give them a key to the city and naming rights to Soldier Field!

Bears?

So my beloved Chicago Bears are taking a page from the neighboring Cubs and dumping fan favorites and great "team" guys in return for unproven punk-ass babies. If you haven't heard, the Bears just traded Kyle Orton (21-12 career record), 2009 1st & 3rd Rd draft picks and a 2010 1st Rd draft pick for Jay Cutler from the Broncos.
So, here they are now with 2 years without a 1st Rd pick and they get rid of team favorite Kyle Orton who has won 21 of the 33 games he's started. This sucks. Jay Cutler is a punk and has proven it over the past 2-3 weeks. His new head coach hurts his feelings and he tucks his dick between his legs and becomes unreachable to his own team. Owner, head coach, GM, even his own agent couldn't get a hold of him. I mean, who does he think he is? The guy had good numbers last year, but his team also blew a 3 game lead in their division to miss the playoffs! He's never won a playoff game or really done anything substantial in the league.
Kyle Orton, although unspectacular, has 64% of the games he has started. That's a pretty solid win percentage in the NFL. He was forced into action as a rookie when the always reliable Rex Grossman broke his ankle in the preseason. He played ok, about what you'd expect from a rookie with no experience. Then good 'ol Rex comes back and plays like shit all season while Orton holds a clipboard wondering why is that guy plaing? But he's good about it and takes it all in stride. Finally, he gets a chance to "compete" for the starting spot (the stubborn Bears finally had enough of Grossman) and easily wins the competition. He earned the respect of all of his teammates and everyone loves him. He goes out and has a near pro-bowl caliber 1st half of the season when he breaks his ankle on a chump play against the Lions. He missed a couple games and just wasn't the same when he came back for the final couple games. Still, the Bears only missed the playoffs by 1 game! He put up numbers the Bears' offense hadn't seen since McMahon was in town, and all with cast-offs as receivers.
Obviously, I think this was a bad move for the Bears and judging from Bears message boards I'm reading I'm alone on this one. Why Orton was never respected, by upper management I might add, is beyond me. I say this because the proverbial Bear himself, Brian Urlacher, had this to say in the middle of answering questios about Cutler; ""But I will say this: I think Kyle Orton is a good quarterback. He's a great teammate. I hope he does really well in Denver." He went on to say, "I guess the Bears felt like we needed another quarterback, so they made a move," Urlacher said. "They gave up a lot. Cutler must be pretty good... I guess we got better as a team," Doesn't sound like Urlacher is too thrilled with the trade.
Quarterback was waaaay down the list of things the Bears needed to compete. WR was priority #1, OL help, DL and DB were all on the list too. Now, they have to wait until the 2nd Rd to find some kind of receiver. They desperately need to get younger and healthy on defense and this trade does neither.
Look, being a Bears fan I hope this works out and Cutler is the savior everyone on talk radio thinks he can be. For some reason, I just don't see it happening. My prediction...Orton starts in Denver, finally has some quality receivers to throw the ball to and becomes a pro-bowl QB. Cutler gets hurt behind the Bears' aging offensive line, they re-sign Grossman and the cycle continues in the Windy City. Good times!

It's been awhile...

Well, spring has sprung and with the new season comes new beginnings. Well, almost anyway. In the spirit of flowers blooming and the smell of fresh cut grass and chicken burritos in El Camino Village, I have re-dedicated the Holy Cow! blog. It's gonna be back and better than ever (which shouldn't be too hard) covering a variety of new topics. I'm also planning on some new video sports blogs when my fingers get tired from my good friend Wally the sports guy. He's got great stuff coming up, especially during baseball season!
